We need input please!

Today is day4 post-up. Cheeto is feeling GREAT for which I am so grateful. The downside is he is not happy with being walked only to potty and then relegated back to the crate. I am going to shut everyone else out of the living room after our next walk and give him some free time with no one tempting him to tussle. My main question is walking; should I start venturing a little father every day or should I keep it to potty only until stitches are out. I need to figure out a way to burn up some of his energy. I did get a “wake-up” last night when we bumped into each other coming through the door and he shrieked in pain. That said his new favorite thing is to jump on me (I did not allow him to do so before) and give me kisses. I know I am encouraging bad behavior but I figure for a little while I can let him slide:-) And his tail never stops wagging when we are out of the crate!

four days is still early in cheeto’s recovery. if you can block off a room, or have an ex-pen then that would work…but you don’t want to risk tearing out some stitches, or pulling a muscle in a remaining leg, etc.. the pain meds make them loopy, and cheeto might not realize to take it easy because he doesn’t ‘feel’ the pain.. we think it’s better to be a little safe until the stitches are out.

I would also recommend trying to play it a little safe. We tried keeping Abby enclosed in the living room, but she would fake me out. (Yes, she was smarter than me. I admit it.) She’d stand by the barrier I put up acting like she needed to go out and potty, and then when she’d go outside she’d flat out refuse to come back in. She would just flop down in the yard and no amount of tempting treats would get her back in. We were afraid to try to move her (didn’t want to hurt her incision) so I would just let her hang out outside. As for walking, I can’t remember exaclty, but I don’t think we went on a “real” walk until after her stitches were out.

My Charley did exactly what Angel Abby did! He would lay down in the grass and not budge….not even for food and he’s a lab!

We used the x-pen to block off a lage area of the great room so he could be a little contained when we were not home. When we were home, Charley had freedom but we have no other babies human or furry.

Sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers to Cheeto!
    Hugs and chocolate labby kisses,

We have 7 small dogs that are still adjusting to big old goofy Cheeto’s presence and he gets super excited whenever they are around.

Valentina would flop down in the grass on purpose too. I ended up just sitting in the grass with her and just taking in the scenery of our pond and such. I think she felt so cooped up in the house that she just needed to get out and get some fresh air. Some days I sat in the grass with her for more than an hour. We had lots of great talks. Those were very special times. I blocked off my living room so Valentina was confined in there until she was healed enough that I felt comfortable with letting her go around the house. It also gave me time to purchase all of the runners I needed so she wouldn’t slip on our hardwood floors. I wonder if Cheeto would chew on a nylabone or something to pass the time. Although it may be hard for him because he is missing one of his front paws. Valentina had trouble for a while this but eventually she figured out a way to do it. Good luck trying to keep Cheeto still so he can heal properly. Sounds like he is very eager to pick up where he left off, living life to the fullest!

It is so funny that you both shared this story with me. After our walk a few minutes ago I had blocked off the living room so he could be out for a while. He immediately went back to the front door, jumped up and scrateched to go out. I thought maybe he had not finished his business. Out we went, down the sidewalk, tail wagging like woohoo here we go! When I tried to turn him around to go back, down he went! Isn’t it amazing how we they figure out how to get what tthey want! I did give him a nylabone but not much interest. Going to town tomorrow going to look for a Kong pr something that could make him use his brain.
